Job Description

JOIN OUR MEDA TEAM

Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting economic development and job creation in San Francisco’s Mission District. Founded in 1973, MEDA has a long history of serving the community by providing access to capital, technical assistance, and training programs for entrepreneurs and small businesses. We also partner with individuals and families to build lasting prosperity through housing stabilization, small business support, workforce development, financial coaching, and education support. Rooted in San Francisco’s Mission District, we’ve seen how economic opportunity transforms lives—and we’re expanding that impact to communities nationwide.

YOUR CAREER OPPORTUNITY

The Institutional Giving Manager is part of an eight-member Development and Communications team at a high-functioning nonprofit dedicated to maintaining the vibrancy, health, and prosperity of the San Francisco Mission District. The Manager oversees a diverse portfolio and high volume of grants, primarily from government, corporate, and select foundation sources, to fund MEDA programs and initiatives. This position is ideal for someone who would love to craft thoughtful and impactful narratives to secure financial support from aligned funders.

This role will lead prospect research, proposal development, grant writing, and grant proposal packaging for grant funding from government agencies (local, state, federal), foundations, and corporations. The Institutional Giving Manager works collaboratively with program staff to craft sophisticated grant strategies and develop proposals from concept to final submission. We welcome candidates who have extensive experience in a specific grant type and who are willing to learn and adapt their grant writing to other types of grants. The ideal candidate must possess exceptional writing and project management skills, the ability to learn quickly on the job, and strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Writing, Management, and Reporting:

  • Develop, write, and project-manage proposals for government (local, state, and federal), corporate, and foundation funding.
  • Monitor proposal guidelines and deadlines to ensure timely and complete submissions.
  • Work with MEDA staff to gather financial, programmatic, research, and evaluation data.
  • Manage a grant-writing portfolio of grants ranging from $1 million – $3 million.
  • Design programmatic strategies in collaboration with the Vice President of Development and management team members.
  • Facilitate meetings with program staff and potential external partners to develop comprehensive proposals.
  • Support budget creation, including justification and collection of supporting documents.
  • Participate as needed in MEDA fundraising activities, including galas, individual donor fundraising events, and site visits.
  • Conduct regular prospect research to support MEDA’s full scope of funding needs and develop funder cultivation strategies.
  • With the development team, track and manage the Calendar to ensure proposals are executed on time.
  • With the development team, ensure that the Salesforce grants database accurately reflects the status of all grants.
  • Work with the communications team to craft program impact statements for proposals, newsletters, and blogs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

YOUR KEYS TO SUCCESS

To perform successfully in this role, you will need to leverage these key qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is a plus. Additional related experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • Successful track record for institutional (grant) fundraising for a nonprofit organization, with three to seven years of experience in grant writing.
  • Demonstrated success and experience in prospecting, writing, and securing government grants including local, state, and federal sources.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong facilitation and project management skills.
  • Ability to effectively collect, analyze, organize, distill, and present information.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and prioritize while working to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Knowledge of community development, housing, education, and/or other core areas of MEDA’s work is a significant plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and also collaborate as a team player.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Spanish language fluency (verbal and written) is a plus.

YOUR MEDA EXPERIENCE

Do meaningful work in an innovative workplace while being challenged for your professional growth.

Joining MEDA means having meaningful experiences that develop achievers – from across the Mission neighborhood and from within our organization. We find meaning and fulfillment in our work as we see our community thrive and are driven to achieve better outcomes by challenging ourselves to innovate in our ways of working.

We offer a market-leading benefits program that reflects MEDA’s values and mission. We invest in people’s lives and support our own people’s health and financial well-being.

Our core benefits include:

  • Generous paid time off – with a minimum of 20 days for new employees
  • Employee Assistance Program that offers free financial or legal counseling to employees or their families
  • Other forms of voluntary benefits
